Fun Raiser” Raises more than Nine-Thousand Dollars for Freeride Development Date: Thu Jan 19, 2006 Source: Sean Leslie Kona’s Las Vegas Bash Nets its Biggest Haul Ever, Increases number of Grant Awards to Nine!!
The Kona Bicycle Company today announced the 8th annual Kona Buck-a-Bowl Fun Raiser, held on Thursday, September 29 at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas, raised over $9,000 in proceeds for the Kona/IMBA Freeride Grant Program. The money will be parceled out in nine grants of $1,000 each, and awarded to IMBA affiliated bike clubs with the goal to speed the development of freeriding opportunities on public land.
This year’s Buck-a-Bowl haul was the biggest ever, and the event’s financial success was matched by an electric atmosphere at the Orleans Casino’s 70 lanes. The party was still going strong as the lanes were closed for the night and the manufacturers, dealers and media of the cycling industry were told, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”
And, once again, the event resulted in the Orleans’ biggest bar tab of the year to date.
“There was a huge amount of energy this year,” said Dan Gerhard, owner of Kona Bicycles. “It’s always great to see people having a really good time, as well as benefiting a good cause at the same time.”
The Kona/IMBA Freeriding Grants program builds on Kona's time-tested, outstanding support of mountain biking advocacy. Kona has been a leading IMBA corporate supporter since '94.

About the Kona/IMBA Freeride Grant Program:
Now in its third year, the Kona/IMBA freeride grant program’s goal is to speed the development of freeriding opportunities on public land. Grants can be used for a variety of purposes, including planning, training, funding campaigns to gain land manager approval, addressing liability concerns, trail and stunt construction, trailhead kiosks and signage, and freeride organization building.
Applications are evaluated on the probability of project success, strength of land manager partnership, projected quality and sustainability of trail and features, and the potential for the project to serve as a model form other areas.
